Chicks hatch in classroom

New life is developing right in front of the curious eyes of primary school children.

Reception pupils at Roydon Primary School took nine eggs under their wing, setting up hatching equipment and a live stream to watch every minute of the development.

Excitement has spread to the rest of the school community, with families eagerly watching the live stream to see the eggs hatch into chicks.

The project has helped Reception pupils who are focusing on the “understanding the world” section of their curriculum, as well as promoting discussions around life cycles and an appreciation for the use of IT.

Enzo Vullo, Elm Class teacher, said: “Experiencing the life cycle of a chick first hand is an unique and special moment for the children. The chicks have brought our learning to life. The children have written about the life cycle of a chicken, counted the eggs and had countless ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘when’ ‘why’ and ‘how’ discussions which are priceless learning experiences.

“The use of technology to live stream the chicks hatching and growing has engaged our class and the whole school with the community in Roydon.

“I think we have just scratched the surface of what is possible with all the amazing IT tools at our disposal and I look forward to engaging and enthusing the children to push the boundaries of their learning.”
