Trust creates exciting new science curriculum
Posted: 26th February 2019Science is alive at Roydon Primary Academy!
The school has this year put a new focus on science across the school as it helps to create a new curriculum.
BMAT, the multi-academy trust which operates Roydon Primary, is revamping its schemes of work across all subject areas, including science.
As part of that development -
- Year 2 spent the day exploring at the Science Museum, in London, as part of their topic on materials
- Year 6 worked with local scientist Tim Collins on a range of investigations, including looking at tooth decay and why the sky turns orange at sunset
- A newly appointed science lead at the school is training at Eton College on the teaching of science and will work with other schools to build the new curriculum
- A science week will be held in March when the whole school will be involved in investigations and hands-on experiments.
- The school’s recent Wow days have been themed on science
- Teachers have received training on how best to deliver science in school
- New science resources have been purchased to enhance the quality of lessons
- The school is liaising with fellow BMAT school BMAT STEM Academy to utilise its state-of-the-art science facilities
Headteacher Michael Clark said: “This year, as a school we are aiming to raise the profile of science for our children. Science is a crucial subject and one that children enjoy, when taught well. We have sourced a wide variety of support to enable us to provide the children across the school with engaging and exciting learning experiences, as well as creating a new science curriculum which will give the children all the skills and knowledge they need for the next step of their education.”
Sonia Ahmed, BMAT director of science, said: “A completely new and extensive science curriculum is being developed to be used across BMAT. Roydon Primary is one of the schools piloting some innovative schemes of work for the new Primary Science Curriculum.”
