Learning like Viking warriors

Learning like Viking warriors

Posted: 6th February 2019

Children took on a new topic of learning like true Viking warriors.

Year 4 pupils at Roydon Primary Academy took a trip to Gunpowder Mills to launch their topic on Vikings.

Each half-term, the school gives pupils a day to remember as a way of giving pupils context to enable them to understand their new topic.

Wearing fancy dress, pupils made badges and learnt about the Viking family way of life, including learning a song and dance.

Headteacher Michael Clark said: “Days like this engage pupils in their topic. Having an event like this at the start of term immerses them in everything to do with the topic and gives them context. They ask so many questions and are in the right place to get in-depth answers.

“They all returned to school wearing their badges and having had a great day. Now, when learning about their topic, they have lived the topic and can draw on those memories. It helps to build their confidence in class as they already know lots of information before they start lessons.”
