Pupils still enjoy West End shows and zoo visits
Posted: 26th March 2020West End shows, visits to the zoo and author visits are all still happening at one primary school.
While schools go on shutdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic, pupils at Roydon Primary School are still enjoying a rich curriculum – from home.
The school is using education technology app and website ClassDojo to connect teachers, pupils and families through a safe online system.
Teachers are uploading videos of themselves reading and setting tasks via the platform each day, with PE, computing and art lessons being provided by specialist teachers.
Headteacher Michael Clark is recording assemblies which are sent home to pupils via the system and pupils are able to respond with photos, videos and online journals.
Mr Clark said: “Our website is full of amazing resources and we are sending out several messages a day with further ways of entertaining children, such as the free West End shows, Edinburgh Zoo live cam and authors reading.
“This has been an incredibly hard time for us as a school. Partially closing a school on short notice is a horrible experience.
“However, staff, pupils and parents have risen to the challenge and are working together to ensure children can still access the curriculum. We are incredibly thankful to the whole school community for their support at this time.
“Hopefully, we will be back together soon!”
The school is catering for 20 children of key workers on site each day, with up to five members of staff on a rota system.
Pupils on site are taking part in maths and English in the mornings, with a range of hands-on activities in the afternoons, including cooking, gardening, art and sport.
For those at home, families are receiving regular phone calls from the school to check how they are coping and useful resources are being posted on the website.
