Book week inspires love of reading
Posted: 9th March 2018A week dedicated to books and reading inspired a love of literacy among children.
Roydon Primary Academy held Book Week to promote reading for pleasure and to incorporate World Book Day.
The whole week was based on Shakespeare, in particular looking at his poetry writing.
During the week, pupils took part in DEAR (Drop Everything And Read), worked with West End in Schools to create a whole school performance of The Tempest, worked on their reading with parents in class, donated books to swap with their classmates and spent a day dressed as Shakespeare characters.
The Book Week Challenge also got pupils to complete a series of tasks linked to reading, such as reading to someone under the age of five and reading in bed.
Laura Spring, assistant headteacher and English lead, said: “Book Week is an opportunity to promote reading for pleasure across the school and to encourage children to read, read and read!
“Children always enjoy Book Week and look forward to the activities that are happening. It’s important for us to instil a love of reading into our children and, while reading for pleasure happens every day in school, it’s nice to really celebrate the importance and enjoyment of reading in a big way.”
